Attendance

Minnesota state law requires that every child attend school for the entire time school is in session. In compliance with Minnesota law and District Policy 503, students are expected to be in school every day unless they are ill or there is an emergency in the family. Research is overwhelmingly clear that attendance is one of the key components to academic success for students. When a student will be absent for any reason, the parent/guardian is expected to notify the school.

Missing School or Arriving Late

If the student is going to miss school or come in late, a parent/guardian must call the 24-hour attendance line as soon as possible for each day of the absence. Please leave a complete message including the name of the person calling, the relationship to the student, the student’s name, grade, date of the absence(s), the reason for the absence, and a daytime phone number. An acceptable alternative to notify the school of an absence is to send a signed note containing the same information to school with the student. The student must bring the note to the main office immediately after returning from an absence.

Leaving School Early

If your student has to leave school during the day, a parent/guardian must notify the school of the absence as soon as possible. An acceptable alternative to calling the school is to send a signed note that your child can bring to the main office immediately after arriving at school for the day. Students must check out in the office before leaving the building, or the absence will be unexcused.

  • Neill students who plan to leave school early need to have a note in the office before 10 a.m.
  • If your student becomes ill during the school day and needs to go home, he/she must be signed out through the nurse’s office, or the student will not be excused.
